There is a surprising place of quiet and privacy in the middle of the busy SAIT campus, where the noise of building work can be heard along with the chatter of students. Tucked away from the main roads, these quiet spots provide a welcome break and a rare chance to think during the busy school year. Jagmeet Singh, a 2nd-year Information Technologies major at SAIT, knows these secret treasures better than anyone else. He made it his goal to find and share the campus's most peaceful spots. Jagmeet is a fascinating subject because he not only knows a lot about these peaceful places, but he also loves them and wants to share their love of them with other students.
What inspired you to start looking for these quiet spaces at SAIT?
A: I needed a space for myself to be alone so I could study. But as I started exploring these locations, I came to understand that I wasn't the only one looking for this kind of area. The focus also changed to sharing these secrets to others in the aim of improving their SAIT experience.
Could you tell us about one of your most amazing findings?
A: The Johnson-Cobbe Energy Center, It's a little-known secret with a breathtaking perspective of Calgary's downtown. It's particularly lovely in the fall when you're alone with your thoughts and the vibrant hues of autumn. It seems like a universe apart.
Do you think spaces like the Quiet Zone are important in educational institutions?
Yes! Attending classes and passing in assignments are only two necessities for education. Additionally, it's about personal growth, which is supported by quiet areas. They provide, a space to calm down and find one's centre in among all the craziness of student life. This kind of area need to exist at every educational institution, in my opinion.
For people who want to find these quiet places on their own or add to the list, Jagmeet suggests getting in touch by phone at 403-555-0198 or emailing jagmeet_singh@sait.ca. He wants to build a community at SAIT that cares about more than just academic success. He wants to do this by encouraging people to share.
